Full Loot vs. Open PvP in MMORPGs
“Open PvP” and “full loot” are often treated as if they describe the same thing. They do not. A game can allow open-world player combat without letting the winner take a defeated player's equipment, and a game can have severe loot rules that only apply in certain areas.
What open-world PvP means
Open-world PvP describes where and how player combat can occur. Instead of being confined to a queue, arena or battleground, players can encounter one another in shared world spaces where the game's rules permit conflict.
What full loot means
Full loot describes the consequences of death. Depending on the game's rules, some or most of a defeated player's carried equipment can become recoverable by other players. That makes the cost of entering dangerous territory materially different from simply losing time or durability.
Why the distinction matters
Two games can both advertise open PvP while producing very different experiences. In one, death may cost almost nothing beyond travel time. In another, a player may need a replacement weapon, armor set and consumables. The second system creates a stronger connection between PvP and the crafting economy.
Safe and dangerous zones
Many sandboxes divide their world into different risk levels. A game may have protected areas, consensual PvP regions, criminal or reputation systems, and fully lethal zones. A database entry should explain those boundaries rather than reducing the entire game to “full loot.”
Risk changes behavior
When equipment has meaningful value, players often change how they travel and what they carry. Groups may escort gatherers, maintain replacement gear, establish supply points or choose safer routes. Those secondary effects are part of why full-loot systems are important to sandbox design.
Recovery is part of the rule set
Loot rules also depend on what happens after death. Can equipment be recovered? Is it destroyed? Does the killer have to transport it? Are there insurance systems, item sinks or protected equipment slots? These details determine how much economic pressure the loot system actually creates.
How we classify these features
SandboxMMORPGs keeps Open PvP and Full Loot as separate database features. A profile should indicate meaningful restrictions where they exist, such as full loot applying only in red or black zones. This is more useful to readers than treating the two labels as interchangeable.
